Working principle of motorcycle clutch

30 Nov 2016 - Working principle of motorcycle clutch

To understand the working of the clutch it is important to know about the basics of the transformation of energy (rotary movement) from the engine to the final drive or the rear wheel of the motorbike. In a simple way you can understand it better, that the power generated as a result of burning of fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber goes to the crankshaft passing through the up n down movement of the piston.

Now imagine the crankshaft is rotating at a 5000 revolutions per minute (RPM) even at idle, has to further transmit the energy to the final drive (drive chain) or rear wheel via transmission box. The transmission box has a series of gears which are commonly called as "Constant Mesh" because they are closely placed and are in continuously contact with each other.

Normally the transmission remains in neutral, which means the gears are not engaged with the crankshaft although the engine is still running and the crankshaft is rotating at uniform speed. To engage the gear with the rotating crankshaft you cannot directly log the gear and even if you do so for the sake of it, you know the result. The bike will be still with sudden engagement of gear and eventually the engine stops running.

Clutch Basket: It is bowl shaped basket which holds the entire clutch assembly. It has teethes on the external surfaces which fix on the primary drive teethes. It means that it is linked to the transmission. It is bolted onto the end of the clutch shaft.

Clutch Hub: The clutch hub places between clutch basket and pressure plate. The clutch plates are fitted to it. It has teethes in the centre hole which rotate with the main shaft. It means it is connected to the engine.

A clutch is that part of the engine which engages or disengages power from the engine crankshaft to the transmission. A clutch is a mechanism by which you change the gears. In simple words, it turns on or off power to the rear wheel. A clutch consists of clutch assembly which includes clutch plate, Clutch basket, Clutch hub, pressure plates, Clutch springs, lever and clutch cable.
